Frequently Asked Questions About BioTreat Septic Tank Treatment

Q. How do BioTreat or BioTreatPlus work without having bacteria in them?
A. The bacteria are already in your septic tank. Septic tanks are bacteria super stores. BioTreat products stimulate the metabolism of these bacteria with the result being more work done by bacteria. Biotreat enhances bacteria’s metabolism, change, population and adaptation to changes in substrate (food/waste), temperature and pH.

Q. Where has BioTreat been used?
A. BioTreat’s main market has been municipal wastewater treatment plants, particularly older WWTP’s to reduce sludge, fat, grease and odor levels to yield a cleaner effluent and less sludge. BioTreat does the same thing in septic tanks.

Q. Are BioTreat Products Safe?
A. BioTreat Products are safe! They are non-toxic, non-flammable, non-corrosive, non-hazardous and are themselves biodegradable. Contact with skin? Just wash with water or soap and water. No handling of bacteria.

Q. What about enzymes?
A. Enzymes are made by bacteria to allow bacteria to consume a particular substrate. Enzymes are proteins (all enzymes are proteins but not all proteins are enzymes) – they aren’t “alive.” Enzymes work by breaking a large molecule, say grease, into smaller parts. Bacteria must then consume these smaller parts. Adding only enzymes runs the risk of having these smaller molecules flow to the drain field instead of being biodegraded in the septic tank.

Q. What about the enzymes in BioTeatPlus?
A. These enzymes attack fats, oils and greases which are common “hard to biodegrade” components of household waste. The BioTreat portion of BioTreatPlus stimulates existing bacteria to quickly degrade the waste pieces made by these enzymes.

Q. If I use BioTreat Products will my septic tank still need to be pumped?
A. Yes, but less often than without BioTreat. The degradation of waste is not a perfect process – there is a residue called sludge. Much but not all of the sludge can be biodegraded and BioTreat helps do this. Biodegradation is like a fire – it leaves behind ashes.

Q. Can I keep using a bacteria product if I want to use BioTreat or BioTreatPlus?
A. Yes, you can. While you don’t need to add the bacteria, BioTreat products will not interfere with the added bacteria but will enhance their performance.

Q. Adding BioTreat to my septic tank – tell me about that.
A. Pour the indicated amount of BioTreat or BioTreatPlus into any routinely used drain or toilet -follow with several gallons water. The amount of BioTreat added does not need to be exact – about works! Forget to dose? Just add your routine amount – don’t double up or add more as that just wastes money.

Q. Tell me about adding bacteria to my septic tank.
A. Packaged bacteria are not really bacteria. What you are getting are bacterial spores. Spores are to bacteria what seeds are to plants – but they don’t take weeks to germinate.  Septic tanks are bacteria superstores and the bacteria there are adjusted to your septic tank conditions. The types of bacteria and populations of bacteria are continuously adjusting to the waste going into the septic tank. This is a natural system for your septic tank. BioTreat accelerates that system.
